El artista nerd
Santiago Villanueva caught everybody’s attention by competing in the Premio Petrobras, ArteBA, 2011. His work was an action-piece titled “Acquisition”. He didn’t win. Nevertheless, although most don’t remember his name, his work remained in the collective consciousness in a more or less diffuse way as “the guy who bought a painting with the money that was given to him to produce his work, and he hanged it there”. I came across an article about this in Radar that was titled “To spend to donate”. This is nothing but misleading: what Villanueva did had nothing to do with charity; instead, it was a concrete intervention towards the construction of a narration of local art history.
